The Fabric

What is Poplin?

Poplin is a closely woven fabric with a fine plain weave and a relatively smooth surface. Its fine yarns and compact construction create a clean, even appearance, making it well suited to garments where a neat finish is important.

Poplin does not have one fixed fibre composition. Many qualities are made from cotton, but versions containing polyester, elastane or other fibre blends are also available. Fibre composition, yarn thickness, density and finish determine how soft, crisp, crease-prone and stretchy a particular quality is.

Where does the name Poplin come from?

The name poplin probably has French origins. An older term, papeline, was used for a fine fabric and is associated with Avignon, which was both a papal residence and an important centre of silk production during the Middle Ages. Modern poplin is no longer the same fabric as this historical predecessor in terms of composition and construction.

Sewing & Choosing

Pre-washing Recommended for many cotton-rich poplin qualities when the finished garment will later be washed.

Cutting Poplin is generally stable and easy to cut accurately; use sharp tools and keep the fabric aligned with the grain.

Sewing Use a universal or fine needle suited to the fabric weight, and test stitch length and thread tension on a scrap.

Finishing Finish raw edges appropriately to reduce fraying and keep seams neat and durable.

Creasing Crease resistance varies by composition and finish; cotton-rich poplin may crease during wear and washing.
